Getting help

If you run into a bug, something doesn't work the way you expect, or you want to suggest a feature, contact me directly:

Email: support@priet.us

I read every email. Please include:

  • Your device model and iOS version (Settings → General → About)
  • The app version (Settings app → IOSTerm, or in-app version info)
  • A short description of what happened and what you expected

Common questions

The app can't connect to my server

  • Confirm the host, port, and username are correct.
  • If the server is older (OpenSSH < 6.7, RHEL 5/6), enable Legacy Compatibility in the server settings — this adds support for older key-exchange and cipher algorithms.
  • If you use key authentication, make sure the public key is installed in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the server.

Which hardware keys work?

Any YubiKey 5 series key. On iPhone, IOSTerm talks to the key over NFC; on iPad, over the USB-C port. Two methods are supported, and they are different keys on the server side:

  • Hardware Key (PIV) — an ECDSA P-256 key in PIV slot 9a. Works over NFC and USB-C, so iPhone and iPad. Needs firmware 5.3 or later. Create it from the app with Protect with YubiKey (PIV) in the server's settings, or with ykman piv keys generate -a ECCP256 9a.
  • Hardware Key (FIDO2) — sk-ssh-ed25519 resident keys made with ssh-keygen -t ed25519-sk -O resident. NFC only, so iPhone only. The server needs OpenSSH 8.2 or later.

"Protect with YubiKey" stops at "Connect with current credentials"

The app signs in with whatever the server uses today in order to install the public key — the same chicken-and-egg as ssh-copy-id. If that method can't work from this device (an SSH key that only exists on another iPhone, or FIDO2 on an iPad), switch the server to Password for one run. It moves to PIV when done, and the password stays in the Keychain as a fallback.

The iPhone doesn't see the YubiKey over NFC

The NFC antenna is at the top edge of the back of the iPhone, not the centre. Rest the key flat on a table, lower the top of the phone onto it, and hold still until the sheet closes. If the NFC sheet opens but never detects the key, reboot the iPhone — iOS can leave NFC wedged after several cancelled sessions.

Where are my passwords stored?

In the iOS Keychain on your device. If you have iCloud Keychain enabled, they sync to your other Apple devices through Apple's end-to-end encrypted iCloud Keychain. The developer never sees them.

What is the "iosterm" location in the Files app?

IOSTerm registers each of your SSH servers as a File Provider domain, so you can browse and edit remote files through iOS's native Files app — just like iCloud Drive or Dropbox.

Does IOSTerm work offline?

You can browse your saved server list offline, but connecting to a server obviously requires network access. Command history and drafts sync through your iCloud account when online.

How do I delete my data?

  • Per server: open the server, scroll to the bottom, tap Remove Configuration.
  • All local data: uninstall the app.
  • iCloud-synced data: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Manage Account Storage → IOSTerm → Delete Data.
